Why we don’t use poison
Poison kills rats. It doesn’t stop them.
Most rat problems get treated the same way: put bait down, wait, repeat. It feels like progress because rats die. But the opening they came through is still there, and the house that attracted them is still warm, dry and full of food, so the next ones move in.
Poison also creates problems of its own. A rat that eats bait usually crawls somewhere dark to die, and in a San Francisco house that means inside a wall, under a floor or in the crawl space, where you can smell it but can’t reach it. Bait and poisoned rodents get eaten by cats, dogs, owls and hawks, which is why California now restricts the strongest anticoagulant rat poisons.
We do it the other way around. Find every way in, seal it, then trap and remove the rodents that were already inside. When the job is done, there is nothing for new rodents to use and nothing left dying in your walls.
Where they get in
Six ways rodents get into a San Francisco house
Row houses, street-level garages and old sewer lines give city rats more routes than most. Roof rats come in high, along utility lines and trees. Norway rats come in low, through foundations, garages and drains. An inspection checks all six.
- 1Roofline and cornice gapsWhere the cornice meets the neighbor’s wall or the roof edge has settled. The roof rat’s way in.
- 2Attic and roof ventsTorn or rusted vent screens open straight into the attic.
- 3Pipe and utility openingsGaps around gas, water and electrical lines where they pass through the wall.
- 4Garage door sealsA worn bottom seal or bent corner leaves a gap wide enough for a rat.
- 5Foundation and crawl space ventsBroken vent screens and cracked foundation let Norway rats under the house.
- 6Sewer lines and drainsNorway rats swim and travel through damaged sewer laterals and floor drains.

No, never. Golden Gate Rat N Rodent is strictly poison free. We seal rodents out and remove the ones inside with traps, so nothing dies in your walls and pets and wildlife stay safe from bait.

We offer same-day service in San Francisco. Call (415) 875-0674 for the earliest opening.
What are the signs of rats in a house?
Droppings along walls, in cabinets or in the garage; scratching in walls and ceilings at night; gnawed food packaging, wires or wood; greasy rub marks along baseboards; nests of shredded paper or insulation; and a musky, ammonia smell.
What kind of rats are in San Francisco?
Two species cause most problems. Norway rats are larger, burrow, and usually get in at ground level through foundations, garages and sewer lines. Roof rats are smaller climbers that travel along fences, trees and utility lines and usually get in through the roofline and attic.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. We guarantee results, and if rodent activity continues we keep working until you are happy with the service.
